Easter in Lockdown

Praise the Lord O my soul.

Even in the darkness

Waiting for the dawn

I will praise the Lord

My heart is heavy

My head full of grief

Yet I implore you, my soul

Still praise the Lord.

Locked down and afraid

Distanced, plagued

My being is disrupted

Our gatherings dismembered

Dismayed and confused

Easter night I inhabit as a native

Darkness familiar,

Entering the tomb

With the distraught women in Jerusalem whilst it was still dark

I go to seek Jesus in hushed tones and self conscious

My worship is obedience made with stooped shoulders, sighs and tears

I have to wrestle with my self to muster the discipline to self-talk with Psalmist

Praise the Lord Oh my soul.

And in the dark, I muster simple praise

God is love

God is good

God is King

Oh my soul praise the Lord

Praise the Lord oh my soul

And in the dark Christ was risen, before dawn broke the night

Love stronger than death

Emerged from the fight

Whilst it was still dark the women walked to the tomb

As tendrils of light seeped across the horizon

Grief’s grip was loosened

Hope’s reach was widened

They found death could not hold him.

Alive, risen, gone from the tomb.

Their words seemed like nonsense

To the first men they told

Their words seemed like nonsense

A dead man can’t rise

Their words seemed like nonsense

To those grieving death they spoke of life

Their words seem like nonsense

In a world locked down and sickened

Their words seem like nonsense

As suffering thrives

Their words seem like nonsense

This Easter morning as the world is in strife, sadness and sickness grief and fear, make the Easter dawn almost too bright this year.

I believe He is risen(Alleluia, risen indeed)

But my heart is still sinking with the hurts and the needs of my neghbours near and my neighbours far

So it helps to remember as the Easter light dawns, Christ rose in the dark, all on His own.

The women walked there in darkness prepared to tend to a corpse

The empty vanquished tomb

Came as a shock

And this Easter dawn

It is shocking too

In a world full of grief

A festival jarsSo in the dark, muster simple praise

Alleluia. Christ is risen.

He is risen indeed. Alleluia.
